GREENVILLE — The Mississippi Valley State men's basketball team has been predicted to finish seventh in the SWAC, according to a poll released Wednesday by the conference.
After receiving 11 of 20 first-place votes, the Jackson State Tigers were chosen at No. 1. JSU went 17-1 in league play last season, but were upset in the opening round of the SWAC Tournament by University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff — who was predicted to finish second in the SWAC this year.
Texas Southern's Travele Jones, who averaged 17.3 points and nearly six rebounds last season, was chosen as the Preseason Player of the Year.
Alabama State's Chris Duncan was took home the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honors.
MVSU did, however, have two players selected to all-conference teams. Amos Studivant, a junior, was selected to the first team. Senior guard Shannon Behling was tabbed second-team All-SWAC.
Meanwhile, JSU placed two players to each the first and second team. Rod Melvin, a junior, and senior Grant Maxey were selected to the first team while seniors De’Suan Dixon and Tyrone Hanson made the second team.
JSU is scheduled to open their season Nov. 3 when they host Miles in an exhibition game at 7 p.m.
MVSU opens their season Nov. 3 during an exhibition game against Victory at the Leflore Civic Center at 7 p.m. Afterwards, they’ll play Delta State Nov. 8 at the Washington County Convention Center at 7 p.m.
